Answers to FAQs

I. Enrollment

  1. How do I know if I am enrolled?

You will be sent a policy kit (policy wording, ID card and claim form) from DCIS to the address indicated on your application form. If you do not have a mailing address, you may request electronic fulfillment by email.

  2. What if I already have other insurance?

If you are already covered by a Canadian provincial or territorial health plan, or insurance from your home country, or insurance from the country in which you are studying, you may not need to purchase GCHP. It is important, however, to be aware of the policy terms and conditions of your current policy and be certain you have adequate coverage.

  3. How can I extend my GCHP coverage?

Students may extend their GCHP coverage if they will maintain student status during the extension period.  To apply, contact DCIS.

    Please note:

    • If your GCHP coverage has already expired, your new coverage will begin on the date we receive your extension application and payment.
    • Extensions to GCHP coverage are not offered to students for travel after their study term.  Other insurance options are offered by DCIS for leisure travel. Contact DCIS for more information on these options.

  2. What do I do if I never got my GCHP ID card and I have to go to the doctor or the hospital?

    • In a medical emergency, the priority is to get medical treatment as quickly as possible. In this case you would be billed for the medical service.  As soon as you are able to, notify DCIS that you have received medical treatment and need your GCHP insurance documents to make a claim.
    • If it is not an emergency, first check to see if you are covered on the GCHP by contacting DCIS.  Indicate that you need to seek medical attention and that you need your insurance documents.

  3. What should I do if there is incorrect information on my GCHP ID card?

Contact DCIS by email. In the email, please write “Incorrect GCHP ID card” as the subject. In the message, indicate your name, student number, date of arrival in BC, and description of the error you detected on the card.

IV. Claims and Direct Billing (currently only available in Canada)

  1. If I paid for a doctor's visit or prescription medications, how do I get my money back?

To process a claim, Allianz Global Assistance will need your completed claim form, along with all related bills/receipts and treatment statements. Tip! Submit all claims as quickly as possible, and before you mail original documents, make copies for your own records. Send claim forms, and all pertinent documents to the address indicated in the claim form.

The deadline for submitting claims is 365 days after the date of the medical expense or 90 days after the end of your insurance policy, whichever is earlier. Submit all claims as quickly as possible.

Tip! Write your name on the claim form as it appears on your insurance ID card.

  2. Which clinics and pharmacies can bill the GCHP directly, so that I don’t have to pay up front?

See the list of participating clinics and pharmacies in the Claims section of this website. At the clinic you will be required to show your Insurance ID card along with your photo student ID card.  Please go to the Coverage section of this website to ensure the medical treatment that you are seeking is not excluded.
  3. Note:

    • Participating clinics will only bill your GCHP insurance for expenses that are covered on policy.
    • You are not required to receive treatment at the clinics named above. The clinics and doctors listed above offer the added convenience of billing your medical expenses to your GCHP directly so you do not have to pay up front.
    • Direct billing is currently only available in Canada
