University of British Columbia.
Your health and well-being are extremely important. If you suffer a sickness or injury, the most important thing is for you to get the proper medical attention. Without health insurance, the high cost of medical services in Canada could limit your access to the care you would need, or leave you with a large debt to pay.
A health insurance plan from your home country may not cover you once you leave that country, may not offer adequate coverage for Canada, and may not provide the service of arranging medical evacuation in the event of a critical emergency. With the Global Campus Health Plan, you can rest at ease knowing that you are well covered.
3 months waiting period for BC Medical Services Plan (MSP)
If you arrive in BC on a work permit or study permit that is valid for 6 months or longer and you will be in BC for 6 months or longer, then you will qualify for the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) after a 3 month waiting period. Do not wait to apply for MSP; apply soon after you arrive. Visit the MSP website for more information.
Insurance during the 3 month waiting period
The Global Campus Health Plan provides top quality insurance coverage at a low cost to UBC faculty and staff (including people conducting a post doctorate fellowship), and to international students who do not qualify for the UBC iMED Plan. (Most new international students who register for classes at UBC will be automatically enroled on iMED Health Insurance for New International Students.)
Students who will not qualify for MSP may purchase the Global Campus Health Plan for the duration of their study period.
